WALK
As humans, we walked the earth for millions of years as nomadic people, hunters and gatherers. Biologically, our bodies are nearly 60% water, a fluid substance. We are born to move. And yet today we are more sedentary than ever. According to Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, walking is the best medicine. It is nourishment for our whole self — body, mind, soul.
Modern science proves walking/running:
aids your ability to process emotions via bilateral brain stimulation;
increases blood flow to the brain, allowing you to feel more alert and clear;
produces “feel good” neurotransmitters helping regulate sleep, mood and appetite;
sustains cognitive processes, lowering risk for memory impairment and/or dementia;
facilitates neurogenesis by growing BDNF- Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor- “the miracle-GRO of the brain,” which generates new brain cells and, over time, increases the size of your hippocampus, a part of the brain central to learning, memory and emotions;
is an incredibly potent and effective “medication” for depression and anxiety.
Walking/running, you elevate your mood, manage your emotions, experience and appreciate your body’s ability to move and you empower yourself because
walking/running is something YOU do. YOU are the one putting in the effort. YOU are the reason you are feeling better.
Walking/running also invites you to get outside, offering time and space to reconnect with your roots and be who you are. Nature does not judge and is always there for us, no matter what. If you allow yourself to open up to Earth as Mother, she can be a great source of nurturance, protection, guidance, hope and inspiration.
The late Oliver Sacks, a physician, author and former professor of neurology at NYU School of Medicine, reported that spending time in nature not only affects our spiritual and emotional wellbeing but also creates deep changes in our brain’s physiology and structure. Nature nurtures by:
decreasing adrenaline and cortisol (stress hormones) levels in the body;
activating your vagus nerve, which promotes relaxation in the body;
improving attention and concentration;
strengthening your immune system;
boosting the number of natural antibodies so you are better equipped to fight infections and other foreign bodies.
Here in the South and Farm Coasts areas, we are surrounded by glorious beaches, nature preserves and trails. Let’s walk or run outside, learn from Nature, marvel at its simplicity, patience, interconnectedness, be witness to countless miracles and welcome nature as a support for our work together.
